MBDC – A Major Transformative Force

MBDC has secured the support and endorsement of the Malaysian government via several different Ministries. This will help encourage and raise the standards of ballroom dancing and dancesport and contribute to the cultural landscape and tourism in Malaysia.

During this short period, MBDC has been a positive transformative force in the Malaysian Ballroom and Dancesport scene. Unlike before, now our dancers have many different categories of dance competitions and championships to choose and to participate, with more to come. Likewise, the Malaysia Open Dance Championships (“MODC”) were successfully held for five straight years (until it was interrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020).

Since MBDC first hosted the inaugural Malaysia Open Dance Championship 2015 (“MODC 2015”) at the Kuala Lumpur Shangri La Hotel in November 2015, it has been customary that the grand finale of all dance competitions and dance championships in the country at the end of each dance calendar year is this one and only Malaysia Open Dance Championship, which features dance competitors and adjudicators from all over the world and world class show dance performances by World Dance Champions and Dance Legends. The Malaysia Open events feature dance competitors, international Adjudicators and supporters from more than 40 different countries.

In 2015, we have Riccardo Cocchi and Yulia Zagoruychenko, the world champions then in Latin American dances; and Victor Fung and Anastasia Muravyeva, the Runner Up in Standard dances in the 2015 Blackpool Dance Festival. In 2016, we had Arunas Bizokas and Katusha Demidova, the world champions in Ballroom Standard dances, Maurizio Vescovo and Andra Vaidilaite, the first Runner Up in Latin American dances together with Nino Langella. In 2017, we invited Mirko Gozzoli and Edita Daniute, World Ballroom Professional Champions (2013, 2014) in Ballroom dances, Stefano Di Filippo and Dasha Chesnokova, subsequent world champions in Latin dances. In 2018, we presented Andrea Ghigiarelli and Sara Andracchio, subsequent world champions in Ballroom dances, Emanuele Soldi and Elisa Nasato for Latin dances.

Finally, in 2019, we presented Troels Bager and Ina Jelizkova, subsequent world champions for Latin dances. Unfortunately, the Ballroom couples, Domen Krapez and Natascha Karabez could not appear for Ballroom dances, as Natascha had an injury.

The Malaysia Open is our Country’s No.1 Dance Championship. The event is now an integral part of our country’s annual Dancesport, national tourism and cultural calendar. The championship itself has become a Celebration of Life. It has certainly been a Long March.
